Fanny Bériaux signe avec « Blow Up my World » un premier album coloré teinté de fraicheur et de notes résolument pop et jazz. Cette jeune artiste bruxelloise y travaille depuis trois ans. Fanny est issue d’une formation classique, et après un premier prix en solfège au Conservatoire Royal de Liège, elle obtient un premier prix en jazz au Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles. Mais rassurez-vous, son univers est large: parmi ses influences, on peut citer Alice Russell, Madeleine Peyroux, Erykah Badu, Fiona Apple, Rita Hayworth, Melody Gardot, etc…

C’est une rencontre avec Jarek Frankowski, producteur et ingénieur du son, qui lui ouvre de nouvelles portes. Lui a déjà collaboré à la production de plusieurs enregistrements studio (Jean-Louis Rassinfosse, Philip Catherine, Zoé, Stéphanie Blanchoud) ainsi qu’à diverses musiques de film (Jaco Van Dormael, Arnaud Demunynck, Marian Handwerker) et des projets liés au monde de la danse (Frédéric Flamand, Michèle Noiret). Ensemble, ils décident de se lancer dans la création de ce premier opus.

Chanté en anglais, « Blow Up my World » révèle 15 titres originaux qui nous emmènent dans un univers chaleureux, un peu allumé, peuplé de jeunes amoureuses alanguies, de chats fous et de shamans aborigènes. Une artiste originale et une personnalité attachante

Mes plus fidèles lecteurs savent déjà que je suis un grand admirateur de Catherine Russell. Il me semble que c'est au moins la troisième fois (voir ici et ici) que je vous parle d'elle sur ces pages.

Je ne m'en lasse pas.

En effet, Strictly romancin', son quatrième et nouvel album en tant qu'artiste solo me confirme dans l'idée que la fille du pianiste Luis Russell  est bel et bien la meilleure interprète de jazz vocal de ce début de siècle.

Strictly romancin' est certainement son album le plus jazz jusqu'à présent.

Il présente un jazz ultra classique, nous renvoyant aux années Django et à l'après deuxième guerre mondiale, nous faisant allégrement voyager de New-York à la Nouvelle-Orléans.

Même si vous n'appréciez le jazz que très modérément, ne négligez pas cet album. Essayez de l'écouter au moins une fois. Vous risquez simplement de rencontrer un des disques les plus directs et sincères qu'il vous sera donné la chance d'écouter.

Je sais que j'ai une facheuse tendance à user de superlatifs, à tort ou à raison. Allons-y donc joyeusement !

Strictly romancin' est une Merveille, un Bijou à l'état pur. La concurrence aura en tout cas fort à faire pour le déloger de son trône.

Roots were a short-lived band comprising Barney Rachabane (alto), Dennis Mpale (trumpet), Duke Makasi (tenor), Sipho Gumede (bass), Peter Morake (drums) and Jabu Nkosi (organ). Replace Jabu Nkosi with Abdullah Ibrahim, add Basil Coetzee on sax and you have the group that recorded the seminal African Herbs LP under the direction of Abdullah Ibrahim.

Roots are often cited as a key strand in the development of an indigenous afro jazz sound that links the Drive, the Pelican Club house band under Dick Khoza, Spirits Rejoice and later Sakhile. The liner notes (repeated below) make reference to the public performance diffculties of the times, something well noted by David Coplan in "In Township Tonight". There was nowhere left to perform this kind of music in the late seventies.

From the original liner notes: "Within two months of its formation, the group has already got down to composing and recording this LP. Barney Rachabane on the alto and Dennis Mpale the trumpet master are the backbone of Roots. These two have played with the greats, such as Mackay Davashe and Gordon Mfanda who were both nipped in their buds by an untimely death. Duke Makasi plays the tenor sax, Sipho Gumede is on bass, Peter Morake on the drums and Jabu Nkosi on the organ, The group plays Rock Jazz with a local sound. Their music takes one back to Dorkay House jam session days which are now no more. They play in private homes and intend making more recordings."

For a long time no recordings of the Roots were thought to exist but slowly we uncover the past through the artefacts we are fortunate to find. We hope you enjoy today's recovery. Highly recommended.

Bercée par la musique gospel, le jazz et la soul, en Californie où elle a grandi, Margeaux découvre en France de nouvelles sources d’inspiration. L’approche poétique de l’écriture, la puissance évocatrice des textes et la sensibilité des auteurs influencent alors son parcours artistique. L’interprète américaine entame des collaborations comme chanteuse-auteur-compositeur avec des artistes français aussi variés que les Marathonians, Funkaroma, Les Pétroleuses (producteur de Nouvelle Vague) et Bang Bang, avant de former le groupe Sodex et sortir deux singles, devenus ensuite des hits clubs. Son titre “ Move me ” sera repris sur des compilations en France et le monde entier, ainsi que dans la bande de son du film “ De battre mon cœur s’est arrêté ”. “ Come on boy, come on girl ” sera, lui, utilisé pour une campagne publicitaire mondiale Peugeot.
A la recherche d’une musique à la fois plus intimiste et spontanée, Margeaux redécouvre le jazz et commence à se produire régulièrement sur la scène parisienne et dans les festivals comme Enghien-les-Bains Jazz Festival, Sunset-Sunside Jazz Club ou le Petit Journal Montparnasse. Elle s’entoure de musiciens talentueux comme les pianistes Olivier Hutman, Alain Jean-Marie et Manuel Rocheman, les contrebassistes Blaise Chevallier et Michel Rosciglione, les batteurs Olivier Robin et Thierry Chauvet, le saxophoniste David Sauzay et le guitariste Olivier Louvel.
En 2008, elle propose un premier album de jazz vocal, Love for Sale, qui revisite les grands classiques de jazz tels que Love for sale, Lady is a tramp et Fly me to the moon, mais aussi nous offre deux de ses compositions aux couleurs de la soul américaine et de la bossa nova. La Javanaise sera son petit clin d’œil à la France.

Pour son nouvel album Rain, Margeaux nous livre 9 compositions originales et trois reprises oscillant entre jazz, pop, soul et musique latine. Le pianiste Olivier Hutman, qui a déjà réalisé des albums pour les chanteuses Anne Ducros, Stephy Haïk, Clotilde Rullaud et Denise King, prend en charge la direction artistique, les arrangements et de la réalisation de l’album. Avec ce deuxième opus Margeaux Lampley nous invite à un voyage à la croisée des cultures.

Born in New York, Margeaux Lampley grew up in California, raised on gospel, jazz and soul music. After receiving a law degree from Columbia University in New York, she left the US and an international career in law to live the artist’s life in Paris, studying music with an emphasis on jazz at the CIM music school and the Studio des Variétés.
Very quickly, she was invited to collaborate as a singer-songwriter for various French groups including the Marathonians (“Come on girl, come on boy”, signed by Warner and used for a worldwide Peugeot publicity campaign), Marc Collin (Nouvelle Vague producer), Bang Bang and Funkaroma before forming the the group Sodex and releasing two singles, which became club hits. Her song “Move Me”, was featured on compilations in France and throughout various parts of the world, as well as on the soundtrack of the film “De battre mon coeur s’est arrêté”.
Margeaux Lampley gravitated towards Jazz naturally. With her warm, intimate style, Margeaux is a regular on the Paris jazz scene, Sunset-Sunside Jazz Club, Petit Journal Montparnasse, and European festivals such as Enghien-les-bains Jazz Festival and is making a name for herself throughout France and Europe. She is accompanied by talented musicians such as pianists Olivier Hutman, Alain Jean-Marie and Manuel Rocheman, double bass players Blaise Chevallier, Michel Rosciglione and Philippe Brassoud, drummers Thierry Chauvet, Olivier Robin and Andy Barron, saxophonist David Sauzay and guitarist Olivier Louvel. In 2008, she proposed a first jazz album Love for Sale, which revisits the great jazz standards.
