La musique créole ne se résume pas au zouk. Un de ses courants s'attache au fond, au texte. C'est cette voie qu'a choisie Baron Black, interprète martiniquais au look rasta. Sans tomber dans des racourcis identitaires, ce chanteur parvient à dépeindre en créole une société marquée par le matriarcat, l'histoire esclavagiste, la foi religieuse, l'identité métissée, ou encore le scandale du chlordécone (pesticide nocif utilisé dans les bananeraies) sur les tambours du gwo-ka, la sagacité de la biguine, la gravité nonchalante du reggae ou une simple guitare sèche. L.A.’s The Aggrolites have made a nearly decade long career out of revivalist ska anthems, flying the Dirty Reggae banner high and proud for all to see. Laced with upbeat, syncopated riddims, a gritty recording atmosphere and an overall good time feel, Rugged Road is essentially a continuation of the band’s excavation deeper and deeper into the Studio One archives. Anyone who didn’t like The Aggrolites before probably won’t be won over by this album. However, fans of The Aggrolites’s previous work (such as myself), as well as fans of early Jamaican ska and the late 70’s UK skinhead scene, will find plenty to love within these ten gems seething with unrivaled energy and dedication to a sound that’s become far too rare in modern reggae music.

The album kicks off with the remarkable Trial and Error, an exemplary piece of gritty, old school ska music infused with ghostly, dub effects, ranging from some fairly typical delayed percussion hits to eerie studio effects which I’m not completely sure how to describe in terms of instruments, only in the feeling– something akin to a tingling sensation in the back of your head.

That said, most of the record is really a superb exercise in the manipulation of recorded sound, a fact made even more astonishing by the fact that the band recorded this entire album on reel-to-reel tape with few overdubs. Despite such limited technological means, sonically this record is far superior to many of its more technologically advanced contemporaries. And, seriously, if the digital version sounds this good, I can’t wait to hear the vinyl.

Three mesmerizing instrumental tracks (well sort of…Enemy Dub contains a brief vocal snippet) follow, leading up to The Aggro Band Plays On, which marks a pronounced change in the album’s energy. While the first four tracks on the album meditate, meander, and mystify with the fly by night production and entrancing ornamentation (impressively varied as well for a five-piece), The Aggro Band Plays On introduces a side of the band previously unheard on this record: raunchy, rough, and dancehall crashing at its finest, really. Lead vocalist Jess Wagner giddily recants his favorite places ranging from the East Bay to Moscow, charmingly regaling his audience with a place-by-place anecdote of The Aggrolites’s journeys across the globe, punctuated by the intensely catchy, group refrain of …and the aggro band plays on!

The following half of the album continues in a most energetic manner, as if lifted by the audacious party spirit of The Aggo Band Plays On. Every track skanks and rages up until Complicated Girl, a mellower rock-steady influenced track whose falsetto, harmonized vocals stretch from the chorus through to the verse in a manner that could make Toots and the Maytals shout Damn! The album closes with Out of Sight, a dirty organ-led instrumental track, which saunters past, leaving the listener satisfied, but ultimately disappointed that the whole experience had to be limited to only 31 minutes and 37 seconds.

I have a hard time finding fault with the latest Aggrolites album. It truly does transport the listener, leading out of your whatever your present state of mind may be and into a dark, sweaty basement party, where the house band pumps out heavy bass and classic ska tunes via the finest sound system you’ve ever heard. For fans of gritty, old-school reggae music with some serious skank in it, Rugged Road is the shit.

The album showcases recordings by Ansel Collins, Jamaica’s busiest and most famous keyboarder besides Jackie Mittoo. Laid down in 1979 with the legendary studio band "The Revolutionaries", whose members included the world-famous riddim twins Sly & Robbie, ?Jamaican Gold? presents timeless Roots and Lovers Reggae, Dubs, numerous instrumentals, guest vocalists Tony Tuff, Roland Burrell as well as DJs Mr. Mystic and Jah Thomas. A journey through the greatest musical inventions in the history of Jamaican music, in which Ansel Collins has played no small part. As a studio musician he participated in countless recordings with leading reggae producers like Clement "Coxsone" Dodd, Bunny Lee, Leslie Kong, Phil Pratt and Prince Buster. And he hasn’t slowed down since, adding the following to his list of collaborations: Black Uhuru, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Culture, King Tubby, Prince Far I, Gregory Isaacs, Augustus Pablo, The Mighty Diamonds, Toots And The Maytals, Buju Banton and Serge Gainsbourg. He’s also played live with just about all the great names, in particular with Jimmy Cliff, U-Roy and Dub Syndicate. Of his own compositions, "Double Barrell" and "Stalag 17" are probably the best known and most covered tracks, both were hits in the UK.

Peu de gens avaient entendu parler de Freddie Cruger jusque-là… Mais depuis la sortie de son premier album “Soul Search” en octobre 2006, ce producteur suédois (néanmoins présent dans l’underground hip-hop depuis les années 90) fait beaucoup parler de lui (on le dit même plébiscité depuis quelques temps par Erykah Badu…)

Au début des années 80, Freddie Cruger (Fredrik Lager de son vrai nom) est breaker et se frotte au rap, à l’électro, au funk et à la soul en travaillant chez un disquaire à Stockholm. Il commence sa carrière de producteur en 1991, avec l’appui du label suédois Raw Fusion, et signe plusieurs maxis dans les 90’s, à la fois sous le pseudo de Freddie Cruger et de Red Astaire. Freddie fait son chemin et fonde même son propre label en Suède: Homegrown Records. En 2006, il décide de passer à la vitesse supérieure en sortant “Soul Search”, cosigné sur le label suédois Raw Fusion et le label UK Tru Thoughts. Incontestablement, Freddie est fan de black music et ce premier album s’annonce à cette image: un album à la croisée du hip-hop, du reggae, de la soul, de la bossa nova et du jazz, qui regroupe une flopée d’artistes connus et moins connus, du jamaïcain Desmond Foster à la chanteuse suédoise Linn, en passant par le rappeur new-yorkais Cee-Rock ou le chanteur Anthony David. Tout cela semble très séduisant… Mais l’impression de départ va difficilement résister à une écoute plus attentive..

“Over The Ocean”, premier titre de l’album featuring Desmond Foster, est une belle entrée en matière. Un son jazzy et épuré laisse subtilement la place qu’elles méritent aux variations de la voix du jamaïcain. On retrouve ensuite Foster sur deux autres morceaux, plus décevants. Si “Something Good” est presque trop classique, dans un style soul jazz un peu old school, “Take It Personally”, qui se veut plus soul, est carrément mielleux… Dans ce registre “New World New Time”, enregistré avec un Anthony David dont la voix n’est pas sans rappeler celle du grand Gil Scott Heron, est de loin meilleur… Le chanteur d’Atlanta se distingue également dans “I Wanna Make You Move”, dans un style mi slamé mi chanté sur un son hip-hop/bossa de qualité. Car “Soul Search” se présente aussi comme un hommage à la richesse du hip-hop… Mais les morceaux enregistrés avec les rappeurs Cee-Rock (”What’chu See Is What’chu Get”), Swingfly (”I Feel Quote Whatever”) ou Rapadon (”Bap Yo Head”) sont loin d’être exceptionnels… On remue un peu la tête, mais rien de transcendant. Dans “Pretty Little Thing” et “Pushing On”, on découvre la voix de la suédoise Linn (comparée un peu abusivement à une Jill Scott scandinave…), agréablement soul mais tout de même un peu fluette. Il reste “Running From Love”, enregistré avec le MC suédois ADL, qui remonte le niveau… Car vraiment sur ce coup-là, rien à dire: un son aux accents clairement reggae, positif et entraînant, qui se marie très bien avec le style d’ADL. Bref, la big tune de l’album

Finalement, si la première écoute de “Soul Search” laisse une impression de fraîcheur et de cohérence, celle-ci s’évanouit après quelques écoutes. Dans ce nouveau Freddie Cruger, il y a du bon, mais aussi du moins bon dont on se lasse malheureusement très vite… S’il est difficile de remettre en cause le talent du producteur, peut-être peut-on lui reprocher d’avoir voulu trop en faire, en explorant une palette musicale trop large, et en perdant de ce fait en qualité et en originalité. Un album à écouter donc avec modération, sans perdre de vue Freddie Cruger, qui doit normalement revenir début 2007 avec un nouvel album. On attend la suite..
